  • Background

    John P. Dormans, MD, has been on staff at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia for more than 20 years. He has served as chief of the Division of Orthopedic Surgery since 1996 and holds the Richard M. Armstrong, Jr. Endowed Chair in Orthopedic Surgery.

    Dr. Dormans served as president of the Medical Staff of The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia for three years (1999-2001) and was the president of Children's Surgical Associates (CHOP’s surgical group) for three terms. He is also the director of the Pediatric Orthopedic Fellowship at CHOP.

    Dr. Dormans earned his medical degree at the Indiana University School of Medicine in Indianapolis, IN. He completed his residency in orthopedic surgery at Michigan State University College of Human Medicine in Grand Rapids, MI, and a fellowship in clinical pediatric orthopedics at The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, Canada.

    Dr. Dormans leads CHOP’s nationally-ranked orthopedic program marked by outstanding interdisciplinary care for all types of muscular and skeletal conditions. A world-renowned surgeon, Dr. Dormans is perhaps best known for his pioneering work in the area of limb-sparing surgery for bone cancer. He is also widely recognized for his work in treating pediatric spinal deformities, specifically scoliosis.

    In addition to his clinical and academic appointments, Dr. Dormans is active in a number of national and international organizations. He is currently the president-elect of the Scoliosis Research Society and the World Orthopaedic Concern.

    Dr. Dormans has served as president of the Pediatric Orthopedic Society of North America and chairman of the Board of Directors of Orthopaedics Overseas, a division of the American Association of Orthopedic Surgeons. He is also the past chairman of the International Society of Orthopedic Surgery and Traumatology (SICOT) USA, secretary general of the SICOT Foundation, and serves as treasurer of SICOT International until 2017.

    Dr. Dormans has published more than 330 peer reviewed articles, 140 abstracts and 150 editorials, reviews, or chapters, and has written or edited five textbooks on orthopedic surgery. He has participated as an invited lecturer in more than 50 countries. He has also trained 47 clinical fellows and 37 research fellows. He and his team welcome the opportunity to provide the most advanced care for children from all parts of the world.
