Background

Carol A. Ford, MD, is Chief of the Craig-Dalsimer Division of Adolescent Medicine at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. She holds the Orton P. Jackson Endowed Chair in Adolescent Medicine.

She particularly enjoys working with adolescents, a patient group she feels has traditionally been overlooked by the overall healthcare system. “The health needs of all adolescents and young adults interest me. I chose Adolescent Medicine to make a difference in the lives of adolescents and young adults, which involves helping young people and their families with a variety of health issues and behaviors,” she says.

Dr. Ford believes a big part of caring for adolescent patients is working with their families as well. “CHOP is a place that helps families raise healthy children all the way through to adulthood. We do not overlook the importance and complexity of raising adolescents,” she says.

Education and experience

Dr. Ford earned her medical degree from the University of Florida, School of Medicine in Gainesville, Florida. She completed an internship and residency in Combined Medicine and Pediatrics at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.  She continued her training with a fellowship in Adolescent Medicine - Department of Pediatrics, University of California in San Francisco. She is board certified in Adolescent Medicine, Internal Medicine and Pediatrics.

In addition to her role as chief of the Craig-Dalsimer Division of Adolescent Medicine, Dr. Ford also serves as a professor of pediatrics at the Perelman School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania and as director of CHOP’s federally funded fellowship training program Leadership Education in Adolescent Health (LEAH). Since 2011, she has held the Orton Jackson Endowed Chair in Adolescent Medicine.

Dr. Ford has frequently published papers on topics related to adolescent medicine and is the current editor-in-chief of Journal of Adolescent Health.

Research

Dr. Ford continues to pursue research that helps adolescent and young adults get the best quality health care, and helping parents and clinicians work together to support adolescent patients. “I am tremendously excited to see increasing attention focused on adolescent health, and helping families to raise healthy children as they approach adulthood,” she says.
