Background

Amy H. Werner, MD, is a pediatric hospitalist — which is an attending physician dedicated to the care of hospitalized children. She has specialized training in pediatric sedation and serves as Medical Director of Sedation for Pediatric Hospital Medicine. She is board certified in Pediatrics as well as Pediatric Hospital Medicine.

Dr. Werner loves being a pediatric hospitalist for its variety — in patients, diagnoses and clinical roles.

“Each day is different,” she says. “In any given month, I have a combination of front-line inpatient care, residency teaching service and sedation. I feel like I get to know people throughout the hospital — it’s never dull!” She is excited for Pediatric Hospitalist Medicine to finally be recognized as a specialty.

“Caring for hospitalized patients in this increasingly complicated healthcare system is a challenge and takes true expertise,” she says. “It’s a great time to be at the forefront of a growing field that has evolved to include things like complex care, point-of-care ultrasound, hospital operations, sedation and more.”

Dr. Werner has a particular affinity for young school-aged patients — those who she says are old enough to talk to her, but not so old that they tune her out.

“Their resilience even in unpleasant clinical situations is amazing — kids have the best attitudes,” she says. “Though their reason for hospitalization may seem ‘routine’ to me, it’s often not routine for families and can be remembered as a major event in their lives. I enjoy spending time explaining diagnoses and treatments to patients and families, and I hope that they can take something positive away from what is often a very stressful situation.”
She hopes families sense the care team’s commitment to providing exceptional and individualized care and that they leave feeling that they were a priority.
