Flash Cards: Vaccines & Immunizations – 2023, by John D. Grabenstein and Laurie A. Grabenstein, is a wonderful resource for healthcare professionals who give vaccines, particularly those who train others to give vaccines.

This tool is available through the Kindle app or by using Amazon’s online portal, read.amazon.com.

The e-book is comprised of six sections, including preventable diseases, vaccine products, antibody products, case studies, travel health and clinical tools. The case studies are presented by age, health status, occupation and personal factors. The book also includes trainer learning guides to prepare students to address the case studies.

The disease section includes descriptions of the pathogen, disease characteristics, how it is transmitted, and where the disease occurs as well as historical timelines related to the pathogen, among other details.

Vaccine product cards offer a variety of details, including, but not limited to, details about who the vaccine is administered to; how it is packaged; recommended storage & handling; dosing, routes and schedule; efficacy data; adverse events; safety issues and drug interactions. The antibody products section has similar details.

One of the most unique aspects of this compilation is the case studies section, which presents details of a patient and then steps users through various considerations. After which, they can “flip the card” to see the answers. Readers are also provided with reminders and additional resources throughout this section.

The travel section is also extremely useful for helping travelers consider not only what vaccines might be needed before travel, but also for precautions to take during travel and for awareness of conditions or recent health events that may limit fitness for travel, such as recent health conditions that may preclude flying on a plane.

The last section offers a variety of clinical tools, including injection techniques, terminology, and various useful tips and tables.

As described by the author, the benefit of having this publication in e-book format is twofold, it “keeps the price low and enables updating in a way that paper books cannot.”
