Evaluation/Treatment of Children with Gastroenteritis and Dehydration

Child with Gastroenteritis

This pathway is to be used for the treatment of children with gastroenteritis and associated dehydration. It is important to assess the child for surgical, neurologic and metabolic conditions before using this treatment pathway. ORT may also be used for other causes of dehydration, for example, fever, pharyngitis, stomatitis.

Children who have vomiting or diarrhea but who are not dehydrated or have only mild dehydration, do not need to be rehydrated in the ED. These patients and families will benefit from education about use of ORT at home.
