Low-Risk Discharged Patients - Testing and Treatment Generally NOT Indicated

Early initiation of antivirals (up to 5 days after the onset of symptoms) in patients with ILI has been shown to shorten length of illness, reduce hospitalizations, and decrease household transmission.

According to the CDC, clinicians should use their clinical judgment for low-risk patients with ILI who are stable for discharge. However if the decision to treat is made, it is most efficacious if antivirals are initiated within 48 hours of onset of symptoms. Testing is generally not necessary in this scenario.
