  • Background

Dr. Pablo Laje is an attending surgeon in the Division of Pediatric General, Thoracic and Fetal Surgery at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and an assistant professor of surgery at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania.

His areas of interest include fetal surgery, neonatal surgery and minimally invasive surgery. Dr Laje earned his medical degree at the University of Buenos Aires in 1999. He completed his residency in Pediatric Surgery at the J.P. Garrahan National Pediatric Hospital in Buenos Aires, Argentina, one of the largest pediatric hospitals in the world, before continuing on to complete a fellowship in pediatric surgery.

Dr. Laje came to CHOP in 2005 to serve as a research fellow in the Center for Fetal Research, where he worked alongside Dr. Alan W. Flake to develop innovative methods of performing gene therapy on hematopoietic stem cells for fetal transplantation. After two years as a clinical pediatric surgery fellow at CHOP, he was appointed attending surgeon in 2011. Dr. Laje performs more than 500 operations a year.

“Working at CHOP is a privilege,” he says. “The expertise that our hospital has in every aspect of pediatric healthcare is second to none, and I know that if there is anything under the sun that can be done to help a suffering child, it can be done here at CHOP.”

Dr. Laje has authored several pediatric surgery textbook chapters and published more than 25 articles in scientific journals, including the Journal of Pediatric Surgery, Fetal Diagnosis and Therapy, Prenatal Diagnosis, and Blood. He also serves as a fellow of the American College of Surgeons.
