Blue Sign and Tip Sheets

Consider for patients with clear behavioral triggers, known behavioral reinforcers, limited caregiver support at the bedside, limited verbal communication abilities, and for patients who have trouble self-regulating and moderating behaviors when anxious.

Post a "tip sheet" and Blue Sign outside of the patient's room to help orient all staff to ways to make the patient more comfortable and procedures more successful.

Example of Tip Sheet

  • Please introduce yourself and tell (patient name) the purpose of the visit before entering the room.
  • Have parents step out of the room while discussing (patient name) care.
  • Please limit the number of staff in (patient name) room at one time. Maximum is 3 staff members.
  • When (patient name) becomes anxious, give the patient a break. Stop talking to allow time to cool down.
  • Give (patient name) a choice whenever possible.

Blue Sign

Designated staff can provide details about preferred communication and other behavioral management strategies as well as planning for the best approach especially when procedures and transitions are required.
