Resources related to maternal vaccination

This month, we came across two resources related to maternal vaccination:

  • "Vaccinating for Two: Overcoming Challenges in Maternal Vaccines" (podcast episode)The Labor of Love podcast, now in its fourth season, is hosted by Veronica Marie Pimentel, MD, MS, FACOG. Dr. Pimentel discusses pressing issues in maternal health with leading obstetric care professionals. The second episode of this season addressed current recommendations for immunization during pregnancy, including COVID-19, influenza, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and Tdap. The episode explored areas of clinic operations that can optimize vaccine administration, including ensuring that electronic health records can accurately assess vaccine eligibility, determining best practices for communicating maternal vaccination status to pediatric providers, and providing vaccines in community settings. Additionally, the episode covered steps for effective conversations with patients throughout the pregnancy to build trust.

  • Continuing Education: Maternal RSV vaccination — Medscape continues to partner with the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report to offer free, online courses with continuing education credit. “Maternal Respiratory Syncytial Virus Vaccination and Receipt of Respiratory Syncytial Virus Antibody (Nirsevimab) by Infants Aged <8 Months — United States, April 2024,” is a new course offering designed for any healthcare provider who cares for pregnant women and infants. The course highlights guidelines for prevention of RSV in infants. Learners can also review how to assess the preferences of pregnant women for RSV immunization.

As a reminder, the Vaccine Education Center offers an infographic (English | Spanish) to make communicating vaccine guidelines during pregnancy easier. The infographic also includes a QR code to an accompanying article, originally published in the VEC’s newsletter for the public, Parents PACK.

New film! Defeating a Virus That Killed Half a Billion People – The Plea

The Plea is a 25-minute documentary by Neil Halloran that tells the story of the first vaccine and the eradication of smallpox. The film shares the impact of smallpox as it moved through humanity during different historical periods, juxtaposing historical images with clear representations of data to demonstrate the incredible impact of the virus. Smallpox remains the only eradicated infectious disease of humans. The film provides inspiration toward efforts to successfully eradicate other deadly infections, such as polio.
