The Center for Amplified Musculoskeletal Pain Syndrome at CHOP supports patients and families with a wide range of services including consultative, outpatient and therapeutic hospital treatment programs. Our program is staffed by an expert team of pediatric rheumatologists, psychologists, social workers, creative arts therapists and others who work together to support children and teens with amplified musculoskeletal pain syndrome.
We offer varying levels of support based on your child’s needs including:
- A multidisciplinary consultative clinic
- Outpatient treatment
- An intensive and therapeutic hospital treatment program
Multidisciplinary consultative clinic
For most patients, their first interaction with the AMPS team is at our multidisciplinary consultative clinic. At this visit, you and your child will meet members of our team who may include a physician, psychologist, social worker, physical therapist and occupational therapist. During this initial visit, our team will provide individualized recommendations and next steps for your child. Learn more about our multidisciplinary consultative clinic.
Outpatient treatment services
The majority of children seen at the Center for Amplified Musculoskeletal Pain Syndrome will begin treatment with outpatient services with follow-up in our pain clinic every 3-4 months. Outpatient treatment may include psychotherapy, an individualized aerobic exercise program, structured physical and occupational therapy services, introduction of desensitization techniques, creative arts therapy and school re-entry planning. 3 Phases of Treatment
Learn about the three distinct phases of AMPS treatment at CHOP, parents’ role in treatment, and how mental health, sleep, nutrition and typical activities play a role.
For patients who need more intensive treatment for AMPS, CHOP offers a therapeutic hospital treatment program – available as a Day Hospital program for most patients (who receive therapy each day and return home at night), and an inpatient program for those traveling a distance or who need 24/7 support and resources.
