This seminar focuses on Medical Leadership and was delivered in Salzburg, Austria, from October 15 – 21, 2017. The lectures are prepared by staff from Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) in weeklong modules that are prepared in affiliation with the American Austrian Foundation Open Medical Institute. The lectures of this seminar are presented in the order of the live event.

Leadership – What Makes a Great Leader?

At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to define leadership, describe the qualities of a great leader, understand the term "emotional intelligence," list barriers to effective leadership, and incorporate these notions into your leadership skills.

Leadership – Styles

At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to identify different leadership styles, compare and contrast leaders versus managers, define "servant and humanistic leadership," and understand anti-leaders and how they operate.

Communicating for Influence: DISC

At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to understand what DISC is, identify which style they are, analyze various DISC styles, and understand how to use DISC to influence others.

Leading Towards Value: Quality & Cost in Health Care

At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to define value, understand what high-value clinical care is, and understand what it means to have a high-value healthcare system.

Leading Towards Value: Principles of Improvement

At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to understand the need for improvement, identify the model for improvement to create a standardized approach, recognize PDSA cycles, and identify how to measure improvement.

Creating Value through Strategic Planning

At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to understand why strategic planning is important, understand the strategic planning process, identify different frameworks and templates, and identify best practices.

Promoting Change

At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to understand the fundamentals of change, analyze change and resistance, and understand the experience of change and transition.

Planning a High Impact Offsite Retreat

At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to understand an offsite retreat, identify the three key phases of an offsite retreat, identify a solid design and structure, understand how to facilitate a retreat, and recognize how to follow up and collect feedback.

Leading Towards Value: Introduction to Lean Thinking

At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to understand the history and background of LEAN, understand LEAN philosophy and strategy, identify waste and focus on eliminating waste, and understand basic LEAN tools.

Supervision, Evaluation and Feedback

At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to understand accountability, identify how to hold people accountable, and recognize how to deliver effective feedback.

Leadership, Mentoring, Career Development

At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to define what a mentor is, discuss qualities of a good mentor, identify mentee and mentor responsibilities, understand the importance of having a mentor, and identify reasons to become a mentor.

Leading Towards Value: Innovation & Creativity

At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to understand creativity and innovation, identify constraints to innovation, and discuss how to set up for success.
