Magnet Recognition for Children's Hospital of Philadelphia
In 2019, Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia again attained Magnet® recognition as part of the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s (ANCC) Magnet Recognition Program®.
This voluntary credentialing program for hospitals recognizes excellence in nursing. This credential is the highest honor an organization can receive for professional nursing practice. CHOP was initially designated a Magnet hospital in 2004 and was the first pediatric hospital in Pennsylvania to receive Magnet status. In 2008 and 2014 CHOP was re-designated as a Magnet institution.
Magnet recognition status
Magnet status is awarded by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). Hospitals attain Magnet status by going through a rigorous voluntary application process that focuses on the attainment of excellent patient outcomes that are directly influenced by the excellent care provided by professional nurses. The Magnet Model, with a focus on transformational leadership, structural empowerment, exemplary professional practice, and new knowledge, innovations, and improvements, results in outstanding outcomes (ANCC, 2007).
Magnet organizations must show that their nursing outcomes are better than comparison national benchmarks in several dimensions, including patient falls, hospital acquired pressure ulcers, healthcare acquired infections, pediatric pain management, and peripheral IV complications. Magnet organizations must also exceed national benchmarks for patient and family satisfaction, as well as nurse satisfaction.
