The Middleman Family Pavilion at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, King of Prussia, offers a full range of support services for your patients’ convenience. Available services include a full lab and blood bank, 24/7 inpatient pharmacy, outpatient pharmacy, rehab services and advanced imaging. Staffed with children and families in mind, our King of Prussia care teams also include child life specialists and social workers (onsite 24/7) to support the needs of your patients and their families while a child is receiving hospital care.

Blood Bank

pRBCs

  • O negative units for emergency release available 24/7 in the King of Prussia hospital lab and ED.
  • Routine release pRBC inventory maintained at King of Prussia hospital lab
  • Both King of Prussia hospital lab and Philadelphia Campus supply pRBC units to King of Prussia hospital lab patients.
  • pRBCs issued 24/7 with a turnaround time of 2-6 hours.

Platelets

  • One-unit available 24/7 in the King of Prussia hospital lab  for emergency release.
  • Routine platelet orders issued from Philadelphia Campus 24/7 with a turnaround time of 2-6 hours.

FFP

  • Available 24/7 from King of Prussia hospital lab for emergency release.
  • Routine FFP inventory maintained at King of Prussia hospital lab and issued 24/7 with a turnaround time of 2-6 hours.

Cryoprecipitate

  • Routine cryo orders issued from Philadelphia Campus with a turnaround time of 2-6 hours.
  • Cryo is available 24/7 in the KOPH Lab for emergency release.

Massive Transfusion Protocol (MTP)

  • Not available at King of Prussia hospital lab.

Child Life

Service Details:

Psychological preparation for procedures and surgery

  • Psychological, developmentally appropriate information and preparation for medical procedures and surgeries.

Support, pain management and coping education for medical procedures and the overall healthcare experience.

  • Education and rehearsal of coping and pain management techniques for patients to use during painful procedures or during chronic pain episodes.
  • Emotional support during identified stress points and promotes utilization of stress reduction techniques to facilitate positive coping.

Developmental and sensory support

  • Assesses need for and provides developmentally supportive education and materials to patients and families.
  • Supports the family, patient and healthcare team with materials and interventions to support the sensory needs of children (i.e., room lighting, sensory toys and coping materials, comfort holds for invasive procedures, etc.)

Diagnosis education

  • Developmentally appropriate information and materials to educate patients related to a new diagnosis/illness/injury and its associated treatment.

Education and support for families and siblings

  • Developmentally appropriate information and materials to educate families and siblings related to hospitalization, diagnosis, treatment, etc.

Therapeutic play, including “medical play”

  • Facilitates a variety of play and activities which promote self-expression, healing, understanding and mastery.
  • Uses therapeutic play techniques as a diagnostic and treatment tool.

Creative Arts Therapies (Music and Art)

  • Creative Arts therapist(s) provide group and individual therapeutic interventions using their respective modality.
  • Available Sunday - Friday, by referral and based on staff availability.

Pet Therapy

  • Pet therapy volunteers provide pet therapy sessions.
  • Available Monday - Friday, by referral and based on volunteer availability.

Bereavement Support and Legacy Work

  • Child Life specialists and Creative Arts therapists provide opportunities for patients and families to create legacy items and experiences.
  • Provides family with keepsakes at end-of-life and supports siblings in their understanding of death and grief.

  • Sunday: 11 a.m. – 11:30 p.m.
 

Clinical Nutrition

Service Details:

  • Enteral Formula preparation, including fortification of human milk, is provided on a daily production schedule onsite.
  • Direct inpatient care staffed by registered dietitians (RD/RDN) and dietetic technicians (DTR/N-DTRs).
  • Team responds to nutrition, nutrition support and lactation consults.
  • Patients who are identified from the nursing admission database screens will be evaluated for further intervention needs.
  • Support includes nutrition assessments, enteral/parenteral nutrition support and nutrition educations.
  • Collaborates with multidisciplinary team and with Nutrition Support Service (NSS) Attending Physicians.

Hours of Operation:

  • Monday - Friday, 8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
  • Weekend coverage is consult based.
  • Mode of support may range from in person to telehealth.
  • Phone-based support for parenteral nutrition will be provided on weekends

Integrative Health

The Integrative Health Program works with the medical team to provide a whole-person approach, considering the child’s physical, emotional, and spiritual health. The Integrative Health team offers nonpharmacological complementary therapy methods for pain control and other symptom management.

Methods include massage, yoga therapy, aromatherapy, mindfulness and breathwork. Evidence supports these treatments may help in lowering stress, anxiety and pain while also improving sleep, digestion, and general health.

 Where and when does Integrative Health provide services?

  • Holistic Nurse: All inpatient units, ED and Periop.
  •  Monday-Thursdays

Licensed Massage Therapist: All inpatient units.

  •  Tuesdays & Thursdays 9 a.m.-1 p.m.

Integrative Oncology (IO) services: Outpatient SCC and Oncology inpatient

  • Yoga Therapist: Mondays & Wednesdays
  • Licensed Massage Therapist: Every other Friday
  • Acupuncture: will return to KOPH in the Fall.

Additionally, Integrative Health values parental involvement in a child's care. The program gives parents the tools and knowledge they need to support the incorporation of integrative techniques into their child’s everyday routines and take an active part in their child's healing process. 

Pharmacy (Inpatient)

Service Details:

  • Supports inpatient beds, emergency department, perioperative areas, and outpatient oncology clinic.
  • The pharmacy maintains the same drug formulary between Philadelphia and King of Prussia hospital Campuses.
  • Dispenses both sterile and non-sterile dose productions, along with supporting patients on Total Parenteral Nutrition.
  • Can support patients on approved investigational drug studies through CHOP's centralized Investigational Drug Service.
  • Does not prepare gene therapies or support patients on ECMO or dialysis.

  • Available 24/7

Pharmacy (Outpatient)

Service Details: 

  • Services CHOP patients with retail prescription medications issued during inpatient stay.
  • Supports medication refills of patients requiring refills of their prescribed medications.
  • Medications delivery to bedside are available prior to discharge for all King of Prussia hospital inpatient beds.
  • Fills prescriptions written from the ED or King of Prussia Urgent Care Center during the pharmacy's operating hours.

  • Monday - Friday, 8 a.m. – 8 p.m. 
  • Saturday and Sunday: Closed

Lab Services

Service Details:

King of Prussia hospital’s onsite clinical laboratory performs routine chemistry, hematology, coagulation testing, and limited infectious disease testing. All testing not performed onsite will be transported to Philadelphia campus. Click here to access KOP Test Menu.

Outpatient Phlebotomy

Service Details:

  • Specialty Care Center phlebotomy services by appointment.
  • Walk-in appointments available.
  • No home collection drop off outside of operating hours.

  • Saturday and Sunday: closed

Radiology

X-ray

  • Inpatient and Emergency Department exams are performed as needed throughout the day.
  • The Ordering clinician should place the appropriate imaging order through EPIC.
  • Call the DR Department directly to schedule.
  • Available 24/7.

Ultrasound

  • Inpatient and Emergency Department exams are performed as needed throughout the day.
  • The Ordering Clinician should place the appropriate imaging order through EPIC.
  • Call the US Department directly to schedule.
  • Available 24/7. 

CT Scan

  • Inpatient and Emergency Department exams are performed as needed throughout the day.
  • The Ordering Clinician should place the appropriate imaging order through EPIC.
  • Call the CT Department directly to schedule. 
  • Page the Sedation Consult CRNP for inpatients that require sedation.
  • Refer to the Radiology/CT Prep Book for appropriate prep.
  • Available 24/7.

MRI

  • Inpatient and Emergency Department exams are performed as needed throughout the day.
  • Ordering clinician should place the appropriate imaging order through EPIC.
  • Call the MRI Department directly to schedule.
  • Page the Sedation Consult CRNP for inpatients that require sedation.
  • Patient must be screened prior to coming down for MRI.
  • Outpatients will be done between the current hours of operations and prioritized around ED and inpatient needs. 
  • Available:
    • Monday - Friday: 6:30 a.m. – 11:30 p.m.
    • Monday - Friday: On-call 11:30 p.m. – 6:30 a.m.
    • Weekends: On-call

Fluoro

  • Fluoroscopy exams must be scheduled with the DR department.
  • Please call them directly to schedule the procedure.
  • Ordering clinician should place the appropriate imaging order through EPIC.
  • Monday - Friday: 8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.

Nuclear Medicine

  • Nuclear medicine exams are performed as outpatient procedures and are scheduled via schedulers through EPIC
  • Monday - Friday: 6:30 a.m. – 3 p.m.

Rehab Services

Speech-Language Evaluation

  • Consults for services answered by the speech-language pathologist within 24 hours; however, evaluation appropriateness and timing will be discussed with the medical team, as needed. 
  • Monday- Friday: 8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
  • Saturday & Sunday: On-call, per diem

Speech-Language Therapy

  • Depending upon the etiology, severity, stimulability and patient-specific goals, will be scheduled for 1-5 times per week.
  • Monday- Friday: 8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m
  • Saturday & Sunday: On-call, per diem

Bedside Swallow Evaluations

  • Consults answered by the speech-language pathologist within 24 hours. Appropriateness and timing of the evaluation will be discussed with the medical team. Generally timed with the patient's typical feeding schedule.
  • Monday- Friday: 8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
  • Saturday & Sunday: On-call, per diem

Videofluoroscopic Swallow Studies (VFSS)

  • The speech-language pathologist will make recommendations to the medical team regarding the need or appropriateness of this study.
  • Monday-Friday: 8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m(collaborating with availability of Radiology Flouro)

Physical Therapy

  • Mobility assessment for safe discharge (particularly relevant to short hospital admissions).
  • Post op out of bed mobility to decrease complications.
  • Therapeutic activity during prolonged admissions to prevent deconditioning.
  • Monday- Friday: 8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
  • Saturday & Sunday: On-call, per diem for immediate discharge to home needs.

Occupational Therapy

  • Assessment of independence with self-care and ability to participate in age-appropriate occupational roles.
  • Monday- Friday: 8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
  • Saturday & Sunday: On-call, per diem for immediate discharge to home needs

Respiratory Services

All respiratory services are available 24/7. 

Inhalation Therapy

  • All inhalation medication including intermittent and continuous Albuterol.

Secretion Clearance

  • Cough Assist, IPV, Vest Therapy, CPT, Acapella, Therapep, etc. Invasive Ventilation
  • All Standard ventilator management (Through ETT and Tracheostomy)

Non-Invasive Ventilation

  • All Non-Invasive management (Natural airway)

High Flow Nasal Cannula

  • Heated high flow nasal cannula management

High Frequency Ventilation

  • Including oscillator and VDR

Specialty Gas Therapy

  • Including Heliox and Nitric Oxide Delivery

Social Work 

Service Details:

  • Support across the King of Prussia Campus including the ED, inpatient units, and malnutrition NRP.
  • Support also assigned to the Specialty Care Center for outpatient oncology/hematology patients.
