Children with Physical Abuse Concerns

This pathway guides the evaluation and management of infants, children, and adolescents < 18 yrs for suspected physical abuse based on history or exam findings during primary care visits.

Special considerations for NAT in infants:

  • Irritability in infants < 6 mos without fever or other identifiable cause
  • BRUE’s
  • Altered mental status
  • Respiratory distress
  • Unexplained vomiting
  • Bruising

Primary care providers can perform physical exam on suspected abuse patients
> 2 yrs old. If < 2 yrs of age, refer to ED.
