Acute Bacterial Rhinosinusitis Clinical Pathway – Primary Care, Emergency Department and Inpatient
Cohort
- Children with suspected bacterial acute sinusitis
- Not intended for symptoms caused by acute viral respiratory tract infections
- Children < 4 yrs old are more likely to have a viral illness than ABRS
Diagnostic Criteria
Persistent | Symptoms lasting more than 10 days without improvement |
---|---|
Worsening | Symptoms worsen more than 5-6 days into viral URI; “double sickening” |
Severe | Temperature ≥ 39°C and purulent nasal drainage for ≥ 3 days |
Exclusions
- Certain underlying conditions
- Cystic Fibrosis
- Primary Ciliary Dyskinesia (PCD)
- Immunocompromised
- Complicated sinusitis: concern for intracranial extension or
orbital complications
