Difficult/Critical Airway Clinical Pathway — All Settings

Patients Requiring Intubation with Unknown Airway Characteristics

This pathway should be used to guide the care of children of all ages, including preterm and term infants, requiring intubation in all Hospital units (i.e., SDU, NICU, CICU, PICU, ED) outside of the OR.

Patients requiring Urgent/ Emergency Intubation on Inpatient Units outside of the ICU’s:

  • Call 4-CODE (4-2633)
  • The Code Team will activate Airway Response Team as needed.

Micrognathia Post-op Mandibular Distraction Osteogenesis Patients

Fresh post-op MDO micrognathia neonates/infants may be classified as known difficult or critical airways depending upon ENT designation at OR MLB (see ENT procedure note).
