Anaphylaxis Clinical Pathway — Emergency Department

Admission Criteria

Consider admission in the following circumstances:

  • Persistent symptoms > 4 hours
  • Worsening symptoms
  • History of severe or biphasic reaction
  • History of severe asthma
  • Required more than 1 dose of epinephrine
  • Required a fluid bolus
  • Poor follow up or access to ED

Determine Appropriate Service for Admission

  • Allergy Service
  • Allergy patient with stable VS
  • Allergy consulted and accepted patient
  • General Pediatrics, Adolescent, or EDECU
  • Patient not known to Allergy
  • Stable VS
  • At discharge, recommend Allergy follow-up within 1 mo
  • PICU
  • Unstable VS
  • Mental status concerns
  • Upper, lower airway concerns
  • Persistent circulatory concerns
  • Allergy should be consulted
