Anaphylaxis Clinical Pathway — Emergency Department

Serum Tryptase

Serum Tryptase

  • Found in both mast cells and basophils, but in much higher concentration in mast cells
  • Elevated tryptase level is a specific marker for mast cell deactivation

Measuring Serum Tryptase

  • Draw level within 3 hours of onset of symptoms
  • Do NOT send tryptase for food -induced anaphylaxis
  • Send tryptase for all other potential triggers, and especially if there is no known trigger
