Ankyloglossia (Tongue Tie) — Patient Cohort — Clinical Pathway: Primary Care, Outpatient Specialty Care

Infants with Ankyloglossia (Tongue-Tie) Clinical Pathway — Outpatient Specialty Care and Primary Care

Cohort

This pathway is for infants ≤ 6 mos with suspected ankyloglossia (tongue tie) that impairs feeding and weight gain at a primary care site.

Definition of Ankyloglossia

Tongue is limited in its range of movement, and subsequent function, due to the presence of a restrictive sublingual frenulum.

Exclusions

  • Infants older than 6 mos
  • Isolated prominent labial frenulum
    • Existing research demonstrates poor evidence for release of labial frenulum (upper lip ties) and improvement in feeding outcomes. Consensus of experts do not recommend routine treatment for prominent labial frenulum.
