Post-operative Abscess

  • IR drainage (if feasible and safe)
  • Initial IV antibiotics: ceftriaxone and metronidazole (choice might require ID consultation) until afebrile, tolerating regular diet
  • Home on PO ciprofloxacin/metronidazole* for an additional 7 days

*An alternative drug for kids who do not tolerate metronidazole is difficult to identify.
Amoxicillin/clavulanate may be adequate, but an IV regimen might need to be considered.
