Asthma Clinical Pathway — Emergency Department
Before Discharge From ED
- Prescribe oral steroids: Dexamethasone x1 tablet at 24-48 hrs or 4 days of prednisone/olone if first dose given in the ED.
- Consider initiating/stepping up controller medication based on assessment of asthma control.
- SMART (single inhaler) therapy should generally not be initiated in the ED. Review specific instructions post-ED care for patients on SMART.
- Review educational material on asthma and device sheets.
- Review dosing of new and home medications.
- Schedule follow-up appointment with primary care physician within 2-4 wks.
- Review signs that would require a return to the Emergency Department.
