Asthma Clinical Pathway — Emergency Department

Before Discharge From ED

  • Prescribe oral steroids: Dexamethasone x1 tablet at 24-48 hrs or 4 days of prednisone/olone if first dose given in the ED.
  • Consider initiating/stepping up controller medication based on assessment of asthma control.
  • SMART (single inhaler) therapy should generally not be initiated in the ED. Review specific instructions post-ED care for patients on SMART.
  • Review educational material on asthma and device sheets.
  • Review dosing of new and home medications.
  • Schedule follow-up appointment with primary care physician within 2-4 wks.
  • Review signs that would require a return to the Emergency Department.
