History
  • Preceding upper respiratory illness and/or rhinorrhea
  • Symptoms, when they began, presence of fever
  • History of apnea
  • Ability to maintain hydration
  • Exposures (pertussis)
  • Medications given
  • Identify high risk factors:
    • History of prematurity, gestational age < 34 weeks
    • Receiving immune prophylaxis for a high-risk condition
    • Heart disease
    • Lung disease
    • Immunodeficiency
Physical Examination
  • Overall appearance
  • Vital signs, pulse oximetry reading
  • Mental status
  • Respiratory status
    • WOB
    • Flaring
    • Grunting
    • Aeration
    • Wheezing
    • Prolonged expiratory phase
    • Rales
  • Hydration status
