Burn Injury Clinical Pathway — Emergency

Classification Minor/Moderate, Major

Minor, < 5% TBSA Burn Moderate, 5-15% TBSA Burn Major, > 15% TBSA Burn
  • Any size superficial thickness
  • < 5%  partial thickness
  • 5-15% TBSA partial thickness
  • Circumferential burns
  • Burns to head, face, hand, feet, perineum, near eyes, across joints
  • > 20% Level 2 activation
  • > 15% TBSA partial thickness
  • > 5% TBSA full thickness
  • Significant electrical burn
  • Inhalation injuries with no external burns are usually kept in ED
Usually discharged from ED Consider Trauma Consult
  • Trauma Consult
  • Usually transferred to Burn Center
  • Children who meet major burn criteria without significant inhalation injury should be considered for transfer to a burn center
  • Please consult with Trauma regarding possible transfer to Burn Center
  • For transfer to a Burn Center, please call (4-2160) to initiate transfer process
