History
  • Mechanism of burns (flame, chemical, electrical)
  • Closed vs. open space exposure
  • Condition of other victims, such as death at the scene
  • Duration of exposure
  • Associated trauma, such as falls
  • Tetanus immunization status
  • Always consider non-accidental trauma
  • Physical Abuse Concerns
Physical Examination
  • Complete VS
  • Signs of inhalation injury
    • Hoarseness, stridor, singed nasal hair,
      facial/oral soot, facial burn
  • Estimate depth and % BSA
  • Attention to burns of the face, perineum, hands and feet
  • Burns of the extremities / torso that are circumferential
