Social Work
  • PRN for altered coping
  • Lack of insurance
  • Rule-out abuse
SCAN Team if concern for abuse
  • Patterned contact burns with an insufficient history
  • Cigarette burn
  • Stocking, glove pattern to burn
  • Mirror image burns of the extremities
  • Symmetric burns on buttocks
  • Immersion burn
  • Multiple burn sites

Subspecialty Consults

Ophthalmology
  • Burns in or near eyes
Plastic Surgery
  • Ear burns
  • Full-thickness burns that might need skin grafts
Speech Therapy
  • Oral burns
Occupational and/or Physical Therapy
  • Burns over joints
  • Limited range of motion
  • Possible splinting to prevent scar contractures
Pain Team
  • Opioid PCA
Child Life
  • Distraction and coping during dressing changes and procedures

Discharge Planning

Case Management
  • Scheduling wound care supplies for home delivery
  • Schedule home nursing visits as needed
Prescription for Analgesics
  • Acetaminophen and/or ibuprofen 1st line
  • Oxycodone 2nd line
  • Topical anti-microbial (if using instead of
    Mepilex® Ag)
Follow-up
  • Arrange follow-up in the Trauma clinic for the 1st available appointment

Bedside Nurse
  • Provide patient with several days of wound care supplies until they receive additional supplies delivered to the home
  • Provide burn care teaching with caregiver
