Review ED Care

  • Perform admission history and physical examination
  • Include photo documentation in Epic
  • Evaluate burn size and depth, see Lund Browder Chart and Pictures
  • Classification of burns: Minor/Moderate/Major
  • Use “Trauma Burn” admission order set

History and Physical

History
  • Mechanism of burns
    • Flame
    • Chemical
    • Electrical
  • Closed vs. open space exposure
  • Condition of other victims, such as death at the scene
  • Duration of exposure
  • Associated trauma, such as falls
  • Tetanus immunization status
  • Always consider non-accidental trauma
  • Physical Abuse Concerns
Physical
  • Complete vital signs, including pain
  • Signs of inhalation injury
    • Hoarseness
    • Stridor
    • Singed nasal hair
    • Facial/oral soot
    • Facial burns
  • Estimate depth and % TBSA
  • Pay close attention to burns on the face, perineum, hands and feet as well as circumferential burns on the extremities/torso
