Preseptal or Orbital Cellulitis Clinical Pathway — All Settings

Imaging and Sedation Considerations

Imaging Recommendations

Timely orbital CT with IV contrast is indicated if orbital or concerns for orbital signs are present.
Imaging is generally not necessary for preseptal cellulitis.

Imaging Study

  • Use Epic Orbital Cellulitis Order Set
    • CT of Orbits AND Sinuses with IV contrast
      • Includes fine cuts that enable CT-guided sinus surgery

Imaging Considerations

  • Ensure child maintains NPO status
  • Obtain creatinine if concern for abnormal renal function

    Note
Radiology will re-read images of children referred from other facilities where imaging was completed as per usual care
Need for further imaging will be discussed between Radiology, Ophthalmology and ENT services.

Guidance for MR Imaging Overnight Hours

Sedation

  • Evaluate need for Sedation
  • Use ED Sedation Order Set
