Central Diabetes Insipidus (DI)/Arginine Vasopressin Deficiency (AVP-D) Clinical Pathway – PICU

Initial Assessment

History
  • Home Central DI/AVP-D medication regimen
  • Able to tolerate home Central DI/AVP-D regimen
  • Other losses – vomiting, diarrhea
  • Diagnosis of adrenal insufficiency
  • Assess for history of multiple pituitary hormone deficiencies
Physical
  • Vital signs
  • Mental status
  • Signs of dehydration or poor perfusion
  • Urine output
  • Weight

Optimal Access for Central DI/AVP-D Management

  • Arterial catheter or blood drawing peripheral IV catheter
  • Central venous catheter or PICC line (double or triple lumen catheter)
  • Consider placement of Foley catheter

Access may be removed once patient has successfully transitioned to desmopressin.
