Croup Clinical Pathway — Emergency Department and Inpatient

Child with Croup

This pathway is for previously healthy children (ages 6 mos to 6 yrs) with the clinical presentation consistent with the diagnosis of croup, including:

  • Barky cough
  • Hoarse voice
  • Stridor
  • Mild to moderate WOB

Children may or may not have fever.

Exclusion Criteria

  • Toxic appearance
  • Complex medical co-morbidities
  • Neuromuscular disease
  • Known airway abnormalities
    • Vocal cord paralysis
    • Subglottic stenosis
    • Tracheomalacia
    • Laryngomalacia
    • History of vascular ring or tracheoesophageal fistula
