Croup Clinical Pathway — Emergency Department and Inpatient

Goals

  • Reduce:
    • ED length of stay
    • Repeat visits
    • Unnecessary racemic epinephrine use, X-rays, viral testing, subspecialist consultation
  • Assure that all children with croup receive dexamethasone
  • Identify children with atypical croup suggestive of alternative diagnoses

Metrics

ED

  • Rate of ED repeat visit, goal < 5%
  • % children receiving dexamethasone, % receiving correct dose 0.3 mg/kg
  • % of children with X-rays performed
  • % of children receiving racemic epinephrine
  • Disposition

Inpatient

  • Hospital LOS
  • % children receiving racemic epinephrine ( 1 dose, > 1 dose)
  • % subspecialist consultation
  • % with an alternative diagnosis
