EEG Monitoring Clinical Pathway — PICU, N/IICU, and CICU
EEG Monitoring Clinical Pathway — PICU, N/IICU, and CICU
Duration of EEG Monitoring
- Determined by clinical context
- Generally terminated after 24-48 hrs if no electrographic seizures are identified and no major changes have occurred in the child's condition
- If electrographic seizures occur, monitoring continues until child has been seizure-free for ~ 24 hrs
EEG monitoring may extend longer if:
- Ongoing risk for electrographic seizures
- Evolving acute neurologic disorder
- Anti-seizure or sedative medications are being weaned/adjusted
EEG monitoring may be terminated more quickly if:
- Child is rapidly improving
- EEG background suggests a very low risk for electrographic seizures
- Transport is required
- Additional seizure management is not clinically indicated
EEG Monitoring Discontinuation
EEG Technologist ensures approval from EEG MD, ICU MD and/or NeuroICU Consultation Service, and then screens up to present time prior to discontinuation.
