Febrile Young Infant Pathway Inclusion Criteria

This pathway guides the care of infants ≤ 56 days of age with community onset documented rectal temperature ≥ 38°C (100.4°F).

Use individual clinical decision making for infants with tactile fever or abnormal temperatures taken via other routes.

Consider additional evaluation/treatment for infants with:

    Complex medical history, for example:

  • Immune compromised
  • Abnormal neonatal course including surgery or infection
  • Congenital or chromosomal abnormalities
  • Dependent on advanced technology

    Physical exam findings suggestive of bacterial infection, for example:

  • Omphalitis
  • Mastitis
  • Septic arthritis
  • Osteomyelitis
  • Cellulitis
