Child with Febrile Seizure

This pathway should be used to guide evaluation and treatment of healthy children with the following characteristics:

  • Seizure and fever ≥ 38°C or parental report of fever in the past 24 hrs
  • Age 6 mos to 5 yrs at the time of first febrile seizure
  • Age up to 6 yrs if history of febrile seizures

Exclusion Criteria

  • Age < 6 mos or > 6 yrs
  • Age > 5 yrs and no history of febrile seizures
  • Suspected meningitis/intracranial infection
  • Immunodeficiency
  • Cardiac, oncological or other complex underlying disease
  • Known syndromes associated with epilepsy
  • Known neurologic disease, for example:
    • Epilepsy
    • VP shunt
    • Intracranial pathology
