Febrile Seizure General Information

Child with Febrile Seizure

  • Febrile seizures occur in 2-5% of children < 5 yrs of age and are the most common cause of seizures and status epilepticus in children.
  • Children with febrile seizures have only a minimally increased risk of developing epilepsy compared to other children. However, about 30% of children with febrile seizures (simple or complex) will have another febrile seizure.
  • Febrile seizures have an excellent prognosis. A small proportion may require further evaluation and testing.
  • Fever-reducing medicines like acetaminophen and ibuprofen will not prevent febrile seizures, but can help keep children with fevers comfortable.
