ED Nursing Central Venous Catheter (CVC) Care Tips

General CVC Requirements
  • Attach appropriate occlusive cap to all ports on tubing that are not in use
  • When sending blood cultures, not appropriate to use 3 mL withdrawn waste as sample
  • Document in Epic all interactions with central line (accesses, dressing assessments, etc.)
  • If the lumen(s) require more than 6 separate medication administrations (excluding flushes) within 24 hrs, consult FLOC for continuous infusion of stock solution in order to decrease the number of line accesses
  • If child requires specialty lock instilled or removed, and bedside RN is not trained in process, contact VAS

  • Document dressing integrity and insertion site assessment q8hr
  • Assess and document infusing lines q1hr
  • CVC not in use, lock with floor stock heparin 10 mg/mL:
    • PICC and Broviac: q12hr
    • Accessed port: q24hr
