Fever Non-Oncology CVC Clinical Pathway — Emergency Department

Non-oncology Child ≥ 56 Days with a Central Venous Catheter
and Fever

This pathway is to be used for non-oncology children with a central venous catheter who present to the Emergency Department with fever.

Fever in children without an oncologic diagnosis defined as:

Temperature (from any source/modality):
≥ 38.5° C or ≥ 38.0° C with any clinical concern
≥ 38.0° C for child with intestinal failure or receiving parenteral nutrition

Any location or modality used to measure the temperature is acceptable. Reported temperatures by caregivers are considered true measurements.

Central venous catheters include:

  • Implanted port
  • PICC
  • Broviac
  • Apheresis catheters
  • Hemodialysis catheter

  • Hemodialysis children
  • Metabolism with port
  • Sickle cell disease with apheresis port
  • Hemophilia
  • Oncology
  • Stem cell transplant
  • Engineered cell therapy
  • Pulmonary hypertension
  • Hyperinsulinism
  • Cystic fibrosis
  • Aplastic anemia
