Fluid Administration, Continuous IV — Goals and Metrics — Clinical Pathway: Inpatient

Continuous IV Fluid Administration Clinical Pathway — Inpatient

Goals

  • Provide evidence-based, physiologically sound, best-practice care to hospitalized children who require IV fluids
  • Improve the safety of IV fluid administration by simplifying and standardizing the selection of fluid composition and rate

Metrics

  • Outcome measure: Incidence of severe hypernatremia (> 155) and hyponatremia (< 128) in children being administered continuous IV fluids
  • Process measure: Proportion of initial inpatient IV fluid orders consistent with pathway recommendations for composition and rate, stratified by initial sodium
