Foster Care Clinical Pathway — Outpatient Specialty Care
Mandated Reports to Child Protective Services
Most children in foster care are placed due to child abuse and/or neglect. In some cases, children make disclosures of additional abuse or neglect once they are in placement. Medical providers may become aware of new disclosures of abuse through direct statements by children during the medical appointment or by reports of disclosures that a child made to the foster parents, teachers or others. Also, it is possible that previously undetected signs of maltreatment are noted during of the medical examination.
If the medical encounter leads a mandated reporter to have reason to suspect child abuse or neglect that was previously unknown to the child protective services agencies, healthcare providers are mandated to make a new report of suspected child maltreatment.
