Skin Barriers

CHOP has several options for barriers between the peristomal skin and a dressing.
Discuss with unit-based CNS/Skin Champion/FLOC/GT nurse which product is appropriate for the patient.

Barrier Comments
No Sting Barrier
  • Creates clear film allowing visualization of the site for easier assessment.
  • If using in the hospital may need to transition to Desitin prior to discharge as it is difficult to obtain at home.
  • Do not use for patients < 30 days of age.
Desitin
  • Available OTC but will occlude visualization of the site.
  • Apply a thick layer over the entire area to be protected (think “icing on a cake”).
  • Can be difficult to remove – mineral oil may aid in removal (available through pharmacy if needed).
Petrolatum (Vaseline)
  • This will provide a clear film allowing visualization of the site.
HydraGuard
  • Apply over the entire area to be protected (think “icing on a cake”).
  • HydraGuard will turn clear as it is being applied, Desitin will not.
