Infants ≥ 35 Weeks Gestation with Hyperbilirubinemia/Jaundice

Recommendations were adapted from the 2022 AAP Guidelines and local expert consensus.  

This pathway guides the care for infants in the nursery, N/IICU, primary care, ED, and inpatient setting with:

  • Visible jaundice or history of or documented elevated TSB
  • Age < 21 days
  • Gestational ≥ 35 week

Exclusions

  • Gestational Age < 35 weeks
  • Age ≥ 21 days
  • Concern for other associated illnesses:
    • Infection
    • Cardiac disease
    • Metabolic disease etc.

Differential Diagnosis for Neonatal Jaundice

Consultation with Gastroenterology/Hepatology is recommended for:

  • Direct bilirubin concentration > 1.0 mg/dL
  • Conjugated bilirubin ≥ 0.3 mg/dL

Caution should be used if applying this guidance in countries with more limited healthcare resources.
