Neonates with Hyperbilirubinemia/Jaundice Clinical Pathway

Outpatient Laboratory Process for TSB Checks on Sundays and Weekend Holidays

Discharging Provider needs to order for outpatient TSB and is responsible for reviewing and acting on results.

Hours Sundays 12:30 p.m. - 2:30 p.m.
PCP Process
  • Enters order for outpatient serum bilirubin level
  • PCP assumes the responsibility of checking results and follow-up actions needed
PSR on Buerger 2
  • Registers infant for outpatient lab draw
  • Sends Epic secure chat to “PHL Phleb Lead IP” that infant has arrived for bilirubin blood draw
  • PSR will re-contact the phlebotomist as necessary if there is any delay
Phlebotomist
  • Phlebotomist will go to the Buerger 2 Registration Desk and then escort the infant/family to the Phlebotomy Lab
    • Obtain blood
    • Provide directions as needed for the patient to leave
    • PCP will check the results
Patient Instructions
  • Family should arrive at Buerger Center for Advanced Pediatric Care on Sundays between 12:30 p.m. - 2:30 p.m.
  • How to get to the Buerger 2 Registration:
    • Take the Buerger patient elevators to floor 2
    • Upon exiting the elevators, the Registration Desk will be located straight ahead
  • The Registration (PSR) person will register the infant for their phlebotomy appointment
  • The PSR will send an Epic secure chat to “PHL Phleb Lead IP” that an infant has arrived for a bilirubin level check
  • The Phlebotomist will go to the Buerger 2 Registration Desk and escort the family to the Phlebotomy Lab

Emergency Department Process for TSB Checks on Weekday Holidays

Weekday Holiday Hours Sundays 12:30 p.m. - 2:30 p.m.
PCP Process
  • Enters order for outpatient serum bilirubin level
  • PCP assumes the responsibility of checking results and follow-up actions needed
ED PSR
  • Creates walk-in lab encounter for infant outpatient lab draw
  • Sends Epic secure chat to “PHL Phleb Lead IP” that infant has arrived for bilirubin
    blood draw
  • PSR will re-contact the phlebotomist as necessary if there is any delay
Phlebotomist
  • Phlebotomist will retrieve the patient from the ED waiting and then escort the infant/family to the Phlebotomy Lab
    • Obtain blood
    • Provide directions as needed for the patient to leave
    • PCP will check the results
Patient Instructions
  • Family should only arrive in the ED for lab draws on Holidays that fall on the weekday
  • Holiday weekday hours 12:30 p.m. - 2:30 p.m.
  • How to get to the PHL ED:
    • Families can park in BGR LOT C garage
    • Enter through the Main Entrance on Civic Center Blvd
    • Upon entering, families should arrive at the ED check-in desk
  • The Registration (PSR) person will register the infant for their phlebotomy appointment
  • The PSR will send an Epic secure chat to “PHL Phleb Lead IP” that an infant has arrived for a bilirubin level check
  • The Phlebotomist will go to the Buerger 2 Registration Desk and escort the family to the Phlebotomy Lab
