Hypocalcemia Surveillance, Total Thyroidectomy — Patient Undergoing Total Thyroidectomy — Clinical Pathway: Inpatient and Outpatient Specialty Care

Thyroidectomy Calcium Management Clinical Pathway — Inpatient and Outpatient Specialty Care

Child Undergoing Total Thyroidectomy

This pathway should be used to guide the monitoring and management of serum calcium levels in children undergoing a total thyroidectomy.

Children who undergo total thyroidectomy are at risk for hypocalcemia due to disruption of the parathyroid glands, four glands that are typically located on the back of the thyroid gland. This may lead to transient or permanent hypoparathyroidism.

Exclusions

  • Children undergoing a thyroid lobectomy
  • Children with a known pre-existing disorder of calcium/parathyroid hormone
