Diagnosis of Malnutrition: Abbreviated Aged-Based Criteria

 

Age: < 1 month for term infants and < 1 month corrected for pre-term infants

Classification Severe Moderate Mild
Weight Gain Velocity < 25% of the norm for expected weight gain < 50% of the norm for expected weight gain < 75% of the norm for expected weight gain

Criteria for Diagnosis Preterm Infants

Age: 1 month (corrected) to 2 years

Classification Severe Moderate Mild
Weight-for-length Z-score Z-score -3 or worse Z-score = -2.0 to -2.99 Z-score = -1.0 to -1.99
Needs additional positive diagnostic criteria to make a malnutrition diagnosis
Weight Gain Velocity < 25% of the norm for expected weight gain < 50% of the norm for expected weight gain < 75% of the norm for expected weight gain

Age: 2 to 18 years
