Measles Testing

Clinical-decision Making for Measles Testing

Call 5-SAFE prior to sending tests.

Ensure both specimens are sent and confirm receipt by the lab.

Nasal Swab	Measles PCR
Urine	Measles PCR Offer cath to family after 2 hrs if no bagged specimen produced. If no urine available w/in reasonable time, okay to not send urine specimen. Importantly, call lab and let them know NP test only, okay to release NP specimen to the state lab.
Serologies	Measles IgG/IgM via PA DOH. Order through ED Measles Orderset only (not to be sent to Labcorp). Send only if recommended by IPC (via 5-SAFE).

PA DOH Requisition Form should accompany order made in Epic.

Please use ED Measles Orderset (in addition to PA DOH Requisition Form) to ensure proper ordering:
