Patient Education and Adjunctive Therapies

Patient Education
Child Life
  • Relaxation, stress reduction, and pain coping techniques
  • Assists with daily, structured schedule
  • **Please place formal consult within 24 hours of admission
Activity
  • Encourage
    • Ambulation
    • Normal schedule for meals, sleep
  • Temporary brain rest (no texting, TV)
Integrative Medicine
  • When available
Social Work
  • Assist families with community referrals for behavioral health services to provide support and increase coping with headaches.
     
Psychology/Psychiatry Services
  • Consult Behavioral Health for:
    • Evaluation of acute psychological symptoms that might be impacting care (e.g., mood symptoms interfering with treatment), or physical symptoms that may be a result of mood/stress
    • Acute psychiatric needs (suicidality, mania, aggression)
    • Significant psychiatric or mood symptoms which require medication management
  • If the patient is followed by outpatient mental health provider(s):
    • Contact provider
    • Consult BHIP only if there is an urgent inpatient need
  • Make sure patient and family are aware of psych consult before team comes to the room.
