Mpox — Patient Counseling — Clinical Pathway: Emergency Department, Outpatient Specialty Care and Primary Care

Mpox (Monkeypox) Clinical Pathway — Emergency Department, Outpatient Specialty Care and Primary Care

Patient Counseling

  • People with mpox should isolate at home until rash has fully resolved, the scabs have fallen off, and a fresh layer of intact skin has formed.
    Mpox Home Isolation Guidelines
  • City or State will contact the patient if they test positive for mpox for contact tracing

Vaccine Access

PDPH has added mpox to the COVID-19 call line to help people exposed to mpox get vaccinated. Community members can call (215) 685-5488 to talk to a health department worker who will collect information about their mpox exposure.

If the patient has been exposed but has not developed symptoms, the person can receive an appointment to be vaccinated at a city health center.

Sexual Health Considerations

Barrier practices for sex (i.e., wearing condoms, latex gloves) are recommended after recovery, some countries are recommending a minimum of 8 weeks; no formal guidance from CDC due to lack of data.

Follow the CDC Guidelines for Safer Sex and Social Gatherings
