Mpox (Monkeypox) Clinical Pathway — Emergency Department, Outpatient Specialty Care and Primary Care
Positive Test
Patients and families should be informed of positive results immediately and provided isolation guidance.
Positive test results will be reported directly from the lab to the appropriate county health department. However, clinicians should also contact their county health department directly if there is concern for potential widespread transmission from the source patient (for example, patient in daycare, mental health hospital, prison or another congregate setting.
ID Consultation
- For uncomplicated cases not requiring treatment or hospitalization, ID consultation is not necessary
- Consider Infectious Diseases consultation in case of severe disease requiring hospitalization
- Consideration for use of Tecovirimat (TPOXX), or superinfection of lesions not responsive to first-line antibiotics
Admission Considerations
- All CHOP ER referrals for suspected or confirmed mpox cases should be called to 215-590-2160 and clinician should state nature of exposure or date of positive test

Reporting Guidance
ARUP, LabCorp, and Quest will be doing the reporting to the appropriate health department.
