Multiple Patient Events and Mass Casualty Incidents Clinical Pathway — Emergency Department

Create Space for MPE Patients

  • Assist with the relocation of existing (non-MPE) ED patients, to create room for arriving patients
    • Stable patients awaiting lab results must be moved to atrium or waiting room
  • Move select non-MPE patients to waiting room or to inpatient beds
    • Consider moving medical patients awaiting admission to EDECU or to sedation unit
    • Consider moving surgical patients awaiting surgery to the PACU
    • Med/surg floor nurses will likely need to come to ED to escort admitted patients upstairs
  • Identify space to care for MPE patients in ED
    • For critical patients: use the resuscitation room’s 3 bays and the 4 BH rooms
    • For acute patients: use Team 1 rooms 8-11
    • For acute patients: consider using existing empty rooms in teams 1, 2, or 3
