Neonate: Myelomeningocele/Myeloschisis — Orthopedic Issues — Clinical Pathway: ICU

Neonatal Myelomeningocele/Myeloschisis Clinical Pathway — ICU

Orthopedic Issues for Infants with Prenatal or Postnatal Closure

Goal: Evaluate Lower Extremity Function and for Clubbed Feet

  • Infants with myelomeningocele/myeloschisis are prone to clubbed feet and may require casting per Orthopedics recommendations.
  • With serial casting, be sure all toes are visible and assess for perfusion. Monitor skin integrity around cast. If there is any concern for perfusion around the cast, please alert the FLC.
  • If there is concern, remove the casts and make Orthopedics aware.
  • On the day of the cast change, please coordinate timing with Orthopedics. Before the cast change, the bedside RN should remove the old cast, assess for skin integrity and wash and dry the leg(s).
