T&A Post-Op Bleed Clinical Pathway — Emergency Department

Instructions for Discharge

  • Encourage hydration
  • Urine output should be at least 3-4 times per day
  • Encourage adequate chewing of all solid foods
  • Discourage use of suction devices
  • Call ENT immediately for bleeding from mouth or nose
Pain/Discomfort
  • Acetaminophen and ibuprofen
  • or
  • Acetaminophen and Celecoxib
  • Dexamethasone 48-72 hours after surgery if the other pain treatments of celecoxib and acetaminophen or ibuprofen and acetaminophen do not relieve pain and is showing signs of severe pain
  • Avoid aspirin for 3 weeks
  • Please read your Tonsillectomy and Adenoidectomy Diary every day
Hydration and Diet
  • Appetite may be decreased for 2 weeks.
  • Encourage eating and drinking often, starting the day of surgery:
    • Jell-O®, pudding, ice cream and popsicles count as drinks. If your child does not want to drink, offer small amounts of fluid often.
  • Refer to the Tonsillectomy and Adenoidectomy Diary for daily hydration guidance.
Complications
  • Bleeding
  • Neck, stiffness
  • Fever
  • Constipation
  • Nasal congestion and cough
  • Bad breath
